Joys of being a sys-admin

I seem to spend a lot of time looking to solve system administration problems at the moment. I’m not actually a System Administrator and certainly have no training as such. However, I have recently been given the honour of acting as Lab Manager at work and being a sys-admin seems to have come with the job.

  • Software Configuration Management (SCM) – how to balance the need to maintain well managed, versioned, accessible (to those in our team) code whilst supporting disconnected, remote, flexible software development.
  • Hardware Provisioning – making sure the projects running concurrently always have the hardware they need, or can at least be provided with it in reasonable time.
